Ever since George Lucas claimed the "echoes" between his original and prequel Star Wars trilogy were "poetry," the mega-franchise has faced criticism for capturing characters in an everything-is-connected universe. With Kid Anakin building C-3PO and Boba Fett's father being the base DNA for Stormtroopers, Star Wars poetry suddenly looked more like Mad Libs than William Blake.

True to form, Lucasfilm's latest series, The Acolyte, spawns similar echoes (hello, a show about twins!) and Easter eggs (turns out people have a lot of strong feelings for Ki-Adi-Mundi). But its 100-year distance from familiar Skywalker Saga storytelling feels like expansion, as history should. George RR Martin gets the approach – look at House of the Dragon – and The Acolyte creator Leslye Headland, mining the High Republic era, comes closer than most of her Star Wars contemporaries.
