Several news sources in Germany have reported the incident, citing the German police's view that the fire was suspected to be arson. Michael Stübgen, the interior minister of the German state of Brandenburg, where the gigafactory is located and where the fire took place, has also called the fire "a fake arson" that damaged a high-voltage power line so badly that it cut power to both the Tesla factory and surrounding towns.

"If the initial findings are confirmed, this will be a false attack on our electricity infrastructure," Stübgen said in a statement today. "Thousands of people were cut off from basic services and put at risk."

Stübgen added that, although arson is suspected, the perpetrators are unknown, "so I want to caution against hasty speculation."
