Amazon Web Services has joined with Google to waive exit fees for customers who want to ditch their platform for a rival cloud provider or on-premises data center.

What is cloud data egress – and why it SUCKS!

The offering, announced in a blog post on Tuesday in response to looming regulatory requirements in at least Europe, is aimed at users who want to permanently move large amounts of data from AWS.

The cloud giant already provides 100GB per month of data output for free, which it says is more than enough for "90 percent" of its customers. But if you happen to need more than this to complete your migration, AWS says it won't hold you hostage and will even provide Data Transfer Credits (DTOs) to bridge the gap.

Amazon emphasizes that you will need to contact support before starting your migration, as it has no way of knowing "whether the data transferred to the Internet is a normal part of your business or a one-time transfer as part of a switch to another cloud provider or on site."
