The Estoril and Faro are two of the four models in the 8ft wide Bailey Alicanto Grande caravan range. Models from this ‘Luxurious and limitless’ range have topped the Bailey best-sellers list since their introduction, appealing to customers either as a touring or seasonal use vehicle.

4-berth caravans The most popular option is the 4-berth caravan as it caters to couples as well as families of up to four people. As a couple, you get more space and the option to invite friends or relatives along if you like and as a family, you get a more practical caravan and a comfortable choice.

They range in size from 6 metres to around 12 metres long, and they typically have a sleeping area in the front and one in the back. They have a separate kitchen area and a bathroom, usually with a shower. These types of caravans can have a single or a double axle.

Each caravan takes around two-and-three-quarter hours to build from start to finish, with hundreds of dedicated workers involved.

Leaking. A common problem with Bailey caravans is the fact that they quite often have problems related to leaking in the roof strap. Some people purchase a brand-new Bailey, and for a few months, they are perfectly happy with the caravan. Later, however, they will start to experience rain dripping down onto them.

Coachman Laser Xcel 850 (2019) There’s an L-shaped kitchen unit, and an impressive central washroom that boasts plenty of storage space, a window, and a circular shower with a useful clothes hook. It’s not the lightest 4 berth caravan you’ll find, but it is very well kitted out.

The majority of modern layouts have the kitchen in the middle of the caravan (as for optimum towing stability, this is the most sensible position for heavier items). The other option is an end kitchen, more usually found in smaller caravans with two-berths (beds).

Caravan vents should be left uncovered to provide adequate air circulation inside the caravan; however if in an exposed or salty location the vents on the side of the prevailing wind and/or the ‘fridge vent may be closed off for the winter.

Meanwhile, the four-berth 430/4 had a front lounge, a side kitchen and a fixed bed, plus an end, full-width washroom. Two new models – the 460/5 and 530/6 – were added in 2013 (for the 2012 model year), designed to boost the range’s appeal, but the 450/5 was dropped.

We found Bailey Orion 430/4s on sale for up to £12,495 for a 2013 van, so our find at £10,995 seemed excellent value! Flicking through the used caravans for sale pages, looking for something along these lines? The Sprite Alpine 4 is a great tourer. It’s well made and the Diamond pack adds plenty of spec, but the washroom is a corner design only.

There’s no doubt that the Orion range of Bailey caravans represents good value as a used buy. The profile will look a bit odd to some buyers and the interiors feel a little dated, but with a decent spec and low prices, one of these could be an ideal starter van.

It was designed to give first-timers and younger buyers a tourer that would look cool. At launch, the range comprised four models with new interiors that were designed to be more appealing than the Ranger Series 6, which Orion replaced. The Bailey Orion first appeared in February 2011, at the NEC show.
