For the most part, dogs are, by nature, easily distracted. They get interested in smells, other animals, toys, people, food, etc. Sitting still and paying unwavering attention to a human that is trying to get them to do something that they may or may not even like doing is definitely not natural.

If you’re easily distracted, it can indicate that you’re under elevated stress. There’s even a name for it: “easily distracted anxiety.” Symptoms include: You have difficulty concentrating and your mind constantly drifts from what you were focusing on.

Focus challenges are real. Kids may really want to focus and work hard at it, and still struggle to concentrate on what they’re doing. When kids are sleep-deprived, they’re easily distracted and more likely to make errors. But when kids have ongoing trouble with focus, it could be caused by ADHD.

The “how we know this” is an important part and can help the kids practice searching for text evidence. One of the strategies I use to help kids identify character traits is to teach them to use the acronym F.A.S.T., which stands for Feelings, Actions, Sayings, and Thoughts.
