Helium is the second element of the periodic table and thus is an atom with two protons in the nucleus. Most Helium atoms have two neutrons in addition to the protons. A helium nucleus is made of two protons and two neutrons. A proton has charge +1 and a big mass. Protons and neutrons are made mostly of up-quarks down-quarks and gluons. At the limits of experiments so far, quarks and gluons are pointline particles and are not made of anything else.

Alpha particles

The three most common types of radiation are alpha particles, beta particles, and gamma rays.

In air, beta particles can travel a few hundred times farther than alpha particles—up to six feet (two meters) or more for the beta particles with higher energies. For the common low-energy beta emitters used in laboratories, light clothing or a few centimeters of air can stop the beta radiation.

Gamma rays

So unlike alpha, beta particles can penetrate a sheet of paper, but can easily be stopped by a thin sheet of either Perspex or aluminum. Crucially, though, in situations where beta radiation is not accompanied by gamma radiation, materials such as steel and lead are not suitable as shielding.

High levels of radiation in outer space can present a danger to astronauts. However, NASA has found gold in radiation shielding is useful in protecting space travelers and even satellites from deadly rays.

BETA – can only be stopped after traveling through about 10 feet of air, less than 2 inches of water, or a thin layer of glass or metal. Additional covering, for example heavy clothing, is necessary to protect against beta-emitters. Some beta particles can penetrate and burn the skin.
