All elemental molecules are made of atoms of a single element. Fig. Molecules of compounds have atoms of two or more different elements. For example, water (H2O) has three atoms, two hydrogen (H) atoms and one oxygen (O) atom.

Molecules are not only made up of different types of atoms but also different ratios. Like in the water example above, a water molecule has 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. This is written as H2O. Other examples are carbon dioxide (C02), ammonia (NH3), and sugar or glucose (C6H12O6).

Molecules as components of matter are common. They also make up most of the oceans and atmosphere. Most organic substances are molecules. The substances of life are molecules, e.g. proteins, the amino acids they are made of, the nucleic acids (DNA & RNA), sugars, carbohydrates, fats, and vitamins.

Stars that go supernova are responsible for creating many of the elements of the periodic table, including those that make up the human body. ‘It is totally 100% true: nearly all the elements in the human body were made in a star and many have come through several supernovas.

Atoms cannot be created nor destroyed, and they are indestructible; they cannot be broken into smaller parts. This was based on the Law of Conservation of Mass. It was later learned that atoms can break into smaller parts. Chemical reactions involve a separation, combination, or rearrangement of atoms.

Everything in the universe (except energy) is made of matter, and, so, everything in the universe is made of atoms. An atom itself is made up of three tiny kinds of particles called subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. The electrons carry a negative charge and the protons carry a positive charge.
