Scientists with the Lunar South Pole Atlas have created two new images of those mountains that show their elevation compared to Earth’s tallest mountain, Mt. Everest. It’s next to Shoemaker crater, and the elevation change from the crater to the peak is 10 km (6.2 mi), higher than our own Mt. Everest.

Mons Huygens is the Moon’s tallest mountain. Its height is 18,046 ft – more than half the height of Mt. Everest! The mountain is named after Christiaan Huygens, a Dutch astronomer who discovered Titan, Saturn’s largest moon.

How then does it boast of mountains several kilometres high? For example, Zeeman Mons on the lunar farside peaks as high as Mt Everest. The answer lies in the one of the most apparent features on the Moon: craters. Most lunar craters are small and bowl-shaped, formed when asteroids and comets impact the surface.

In addition to giant craters and sweeping lava fields, the moon is home to some pretty massive mountains. Up there, the mountains are referred to as massifs. New charts of the lunar south pole revealed the towering nature of two such massifs: Malapert Massif and Leibniz Beta.

The highest point, located on the far side of the Moon, is approximately 6,500 meters higher than Mons Huygens (usually listed as the tallest mountain)….Mountains.

Lava plains The lunar maria are large basaltic plains that cover more than 15% of the Moon’s surface. The few basaltic eruptions that occurred on the far side of the Moon are old, whereas the youngest flows are found within Oceanus Procellarum on the near side.
