The Mantis is far from the best creature in ARK, let alone in Fjordur. However, it does offer some really great tools. First, a Mantis can be a fairly reliable resource gatherer for resources like wood and stone by equipping either a pickaxe or ax on their hands.
That aside, a well-mutated Mantis can be a really good boss assassin. The only problem is that it lacks survivability than other tames like Rexes and Therizinos. Still, a mantis is a pretty good creature to tame, and if you're thinking of taming one in Fjordur, this guide will help you out.
There are several places in Fjordur where you can find many praying mantises. But for the easiest, I can highly recommend the volcano biome located in the southeast part of the map. Specifically, you want to go to coordinates 82.6, 79.3.
