Avis Rent A Car System has alerted 299,006 customers in several US states that their personal information was stolen in a data breach in August.

The digital breach occurred between Aug. 3 and Aug. 6, according to the car rental giant in filings with Maine and California prosecutors.

On August 14, Avis determined that sensitive information had been "obtained by the unauthorized third party," although the notice of an example breach changed the details, so we can't say for sure what personal details were stolen.

Avis also cites "insider misconduct" under the breach disclosure section of the Maine filing, but does not provide further details about what happened.
