Images The BBC has decided to ditch its experiments with generative AI to promote the venerable sci-fi show Doctor Who.

Bad science: AI used to target children with misinformation on YouTube – BBC World Service

The broadcaster announced its intention to use AI to create some campaigns in early March, a move that earned it a thorough backlash from fans – including the people behind the Doctor Who Companion website, who declared themselves "absolutely disgusted." And doubly so, after the BBC took down the page announcing their intentions.

Thankfully, the Internet Archives Wayback Machine has preserved that page. It originally featured an article by David Housden, Head of Media Inventory: Digital, which revealed the following.

We'll create human-written marketing copy for a Doctor Who push note, email subject line and in the ad strip on BBC Search – then we'll use generative AI to suggest copy variations which are then reviewed and approved by our marketing team before being shown to audiences. Their success will be measured by click-through rates, open rates and post-view conversion rates across each channel.
