The Minecraft movie may have just been announced. But it has been in the works for a long time. In 2020, Rob McElhenney was already working on an animated film adaptation of the game, but it was shelved after two and a half years of work.

The It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star was supposed to direct the film but despite his passion and time, he couldn't. He later opened up about the whole ordeal and shared his emotional journey through the failed production. And now all fans can do is lament what could have been.

At first Rob McElhenney saw the lack of a story in Minecraft because it is just a simple open world sandbox game. He believed that the game's open world format was an excellent canvas for storytelling.
