I think Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is one of the best things that could have happened to open world games. Yes, I know we have other glasses like Red Dead Redemption or the Spider-Man games. But for me, nothing comes close to the freedom that GTA offers. This virtual crime phenomenon started in 1998, and we are approaching another big launch from Rockstar. With an appreciation for the GTA 6 release now upon us, I decided to sit down and rank all the GTA games.

Since Rockstar introduced additional spinoff series to all the main games, it's worth mentioning the spinoff, prequel, and sequel as well. That's why I've included all the extra games that came with the original lineup, like Liberty City Stories or Vice City Stories. However, I will not include DLCs that are available and exist in the story of the original games. With that said, let's get started!
We start our list with a game that didn't live up to its promise. After the first top-down open world game ever, GTA 2 needed more than just a small visual upgrade. The gameplay felt clunky and was generally insufficient to follow up on the mayhem of the original.
As usual, there was no real story to follow. I think GTA 2 could have done a lot better if it had taken a little more time and added enough upgrades to be worthy of a sequel.
