Britain's opposition Labor Party – which has a significant lead in opinion polls ahead of July's general election – has pledged to ease planning restrictions holding back data center investment.

Labour's key manifesto promises in 90 seconds

In a keynote speech at London Tech Week, the party's science and technology spokesman Peter Kyle said yesterday that if Labor won the election, it aimed to "supercharge" the UK tech sector and improve its standing against international competitors.

A key measure Labor will put forward is among other things to tear down "barriers" in the planning system that have held back investment in betting barns.

Readers will recall that plans to build a data center campus on a landfill site overlooking the M25 motorway near London were rejected on the grounds that it would significantly change the character and appearance of the area, despite recognition that there is significant demand for data center capacity.
