You can run a 3 phase motor from standard 220 Single phase power. First, you get the 3 phase motor turning it (manually, or better, with a small 110 v motor), and THEN turn on the 220 (connected to two legs) it will run.

Running a three phase motor on single phase power is simple. Essentially all you need to do is wire the single phase power to the input side of your variable frequency drive and then wire the three phase power of your motor to the output section of the drive. That’s it!

You can drive a 5HP 240V 3 phase motor, but not 415V. Single phase variable frequency drive can convert from single phase input to three phase output, but the maximum output voltage is equal to input voltage. In the case, you may need a transformer.

The single phase to 3 phase VFD is the best option for a 3 phase motor running on single phase power supply (1ph 220v, 230v, 240v), it will eliminate the inrush current during motor starting, make the motor run from zero speed to full speed smoothly, plus, the price is absolutely affordable.

Three-phase induction motors are capable of running on two-phase power, but they don’t like it much. Higher currents are required to maintain power output, which will cause the motor windings to fail quickly under high load.

If your neighbor has different phase then you have to borrow that phase then by using step down transformer 440 Vac to 220 Vac you can step-down to 220 V and can be use. But you have 220 Vac already available at home. Generally people do the reverse 440 v to 220/120 V ac step down for control voltage of equipment.

It is unlikely that a 3 phase motor will run with 220V single phase unless you build a setup with a transformer and an inductor. Assuming single phase then, 440V usually means thinner wires and better insulation so putting 220V into that scenario should not cause any danger unless we are talking about an elevator etc.

3 phase system is expressed with line voltages. The line votage is 440 volt. Also the voltage between any one phase and neutral for a 3 phase system is 240 volts.
