Personal pronouns can be singular (one) or plural (two or more) just as verbs and nouns.

As we learned with regard to nouns, singular pronouns refer to one thing or person while plural pronouns refer to more than one of a thing or person (I stood alone while they walked together). English personal pronouns have two cases: subject and object.

A pronoun takes the place of a specific noun. Examples of pronouns include I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, us, them, hers, his, who, whom, whose, which etc. The original noun which the pronoun replaces is called the antecedent.

There are four types of pronouns: subject pronouns, object pronouns, possessive pronouns, and demonstrative pronouns. Pronouns are one of the eight parts of speech.

Singular Indefinite Pronouns

Emphatic pronouns are compound personal pronouns such as ‘himself’, ‘myself’ and ‘yourself’ used for emphasis. Eg: I will build the house myself. We will watch the show ourselves. You yourself can tell us about the situation.

How To Write More Emphatic Sentences

1. Put the most important ideas at the end of the sentence.
2. Keep the end short.
3. Put all subordinate ideas in subordinate clauses.

Emphatic stress is a stress placed on a particular word in a phrase or clause for clarity or emphasis. Emphatic imperative is the imperative form that is mostly used for polite requests. It is also used for complaints and apologies. {See Present and Past Emphatic Tenses, B1 level} We form the emphatic imperative by using do and the verb in the infinitive form.

Besides creating an outline using chronological order, the emphatic order method is often used. Emphatic order asks you to organize your paper in the order of how strong your examples are (hence the word “emphatic” or placing emphasis on certain information over other pieces of information based upon importance).

The emphatic form of a verb makes the verb more forceful. This form has only two tenses, present and past, made by adding do or did to the first principal part of the verb.
