AI could be the mechanism to shorten laptop replacement cycles, according to Dell's CFO.

Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom 2024 conference last week, Dell CEO Yvonne McGill pointed out that the PC industry has just come off eight straight quarters of shrinking shipments.
"We've been in the longest digestion cycle … in the history of computing, and so we know it's double-digit years of double-digit decline, pretty amazing, never-before-seen results. But it's time for an update, right?" she asked the interviewer and the audience.
The drivers for that update — which Dell, HP and others are betting on starting later this year — include Windows 10 that will expire in 19 months and generative AI on the device, though McGill conceded "it's less of a driver anyway ."
