Although college students can receive welfare, their participation in higher education is limited by strict work requirements. Although the work requirement doesn’t prevent TANF recipients from going to college, it does impose restrictions that make it more difficult for them to pursue higher education.

In general, students enrolled at least half-time in an institution of higher education (e.g., college, university, trade/technical school) are not eligible for SNAP unless they meet certain exemptions. Are eligible to participate in state or federally financed work study during the regular school year.

You must: Be a resident of New York City. Have an annual household income of less than $32,000. Not already be enrolled in SNAP.

Here’s the drill: The student — aged 18-49 — must be physically and mentally fit. If the individual has a disability, they should not be barred from receiving CalFresh. If the program or course — as opposed to the college — does not require a diploma or GED, the student bar would not apply.

Graduate students, similar to undergraduate students, must meet certain guidelines in order to qualify for CalFresh. Students who have been approved for work-study. Students who work 20 hours a week or an average of 80 hours a month. Students with dependents under the age of 12.

Income. CalFresh households, except those containing an aged (60 or older) or disabled member or where all members receive cash assistance, are subject to gross and net income determination tests. Gross Income – all non-excludable income from any source including all earned income and all unearned income.
