A Jeep Compass cannot be flat towed. You should never flat tow a Jeep Compass, and you can refer to your owner’s manual for more information. It is possible to tow a Jeep Compass behind your RV or motorhome if you put it on a trailer.

In addition to the Wrangler, other examples of Jeeps that are suitable for flat towing include the Gladiator, all 4×4 models of the Jeep Patriot and Jeep Liberty, certain models of the Jeep Cherokee (only those with ActiveDrive II or 2-speed PTU), and 4-low models of the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

To flat tow a 2013 Jeep Patriot, you will need base plates, a tow bar, safety cables, wiring, a braking system, and maybe a high-low hitch adapter. You will also need a brake relay light like Item # RM-88400 that will work with the supplemental braking system.

The recommended distance is +/- 3″ but the closer you are the better the vehicle will tow. For this, I recommend using the Roadmaster High-Low Adapter part # RM-048-10 which offers up to a 10-1/4″ rise/drop.

According to the owner’s manual, here are the steps for flat towing a TJ Jeep Wrangler with a manual transmission:

1. Depress the brake pedal.
2. Depress the clutch pedal.
3. Shift the transfer case into N (Neutral)
4. Start engine.
5. Place manual transmission into gear (second or third gear are the most popular.
