A Long Day’s Journey If, over time, the Earth finally stopped spinning on its axis, the planet would not have a typical 24-hour day. Because the planet would not rotate away from the sun, a “day” would last for the entire year it took for the Earth to orbit its star.

Earth isn’t likely to ever get tidally locked to the sun — we’re too far away for that to happen. And, though our planet’s rotation is slowing down ever so slightly (a day gets about 1.7 milliseconds longer every century), our planet should never stop spinning completely.

While Mars could be terraformed in only a few thousand years, no gently-gently approach could ever work on Venus. First, alternatives to terraforming. It would be possible to live on Venus in the high atmosphere, in giant floating cities. But Venus is nearly as big as Earth, with similar gravity and heaps of sun.

Even if this loss were prevented somehow, allowing the atmosphere to build up slowly from outgassing by geologic activity, current outgassing is extremely low; it would take about 10 million years just to double Mars’ current atmosphere, according to the team.

Breathing on Mars However, doing this for the entire planet may not be feasible. NASA conducted a feasibility study in 1976 that concluded it would take at least a few thousand years for even extremophile organisms specifically adapted for the Martian environment to make a habitable atmosphere out of the Red Planet.

With extreme surface temperatures reaching nearly 735 K (462 °C; 863 °F) and an atmospheric pressure 90 times that of Earth, the conditions on Venus make water-based life as we know it unlikely on the surface of the planet.

According to the panspermia hypothesis, microscopic life—distributed by meteoroids, asteroids and other small Solar System bodies—may exist throughout the Universe. Nonetheless, Earth is the only place in the Universe known to harbor life.
