AAPC requires completion of 18 CEUs annually. If dual credentials have been attained, 24 CEUs, annually, are necessary to maintain the status of both. If triple credentials have been attained, 30 CEUs, annually, are necessary to maintain the status of all three. CEUs must be earned during the current renewal year.

How to Find Free Continuing Education Resources for Medical Coding and Billing

1. Free AAPC units. Membership in the AAPC includes a subscription to the organization’s magazine, The Coding Edge.
2. Free American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) units.
3. Medicare’s web-based training.

Health care professionals are obligated to stay current in their profession. This includes continuing education in their respective discipline as well as keeping up with the latest medical coding updates, compliance rules, and government regulations.

You will be required to maintain an annual membership to AMBA. The cost of membership is $99, annually. You will also be required to obtain 15 continuing education units (CEUs) each year. Fifty percent of your annual CEUs should come through the association.

If membership dues are not received within 90 days of renewal date for certified members, membership and credential cancellation will occur. Membership cancellation will occur for non-certified members approximately 40 days after renewal date.

CEUs must be earned within your cycle begin and end dates to count towards maintaining your certification for that cycle. CEUs beyond the 8.0 required will not roll over into your next certification cycle.

AHIMA CEUs are accepted from programs sponsored by AHIMA national offices and the state AHIMA branches. AAPC does not necessarily accept CEUs from other entities that offer “AHIMA approved” CEUs. These organizations must apply separately for AAPC CEUs to receive an AAPC index number and CEU value.
