Although the fruit bodies of H. peckii have been described as resembling “Danish pastry topped with strawberry jam”, and Hydnellum species in general are not known to be poisonous, they are not particularly edible due to their extremely bitter taste. This acridity persists even in dried specimens.

The Bleeding Tooth Fungus is not toxic, but tastes so bitter as to be inedible, despite one of its other names (Strawberries and Cream, because of its resemblance to a fruit danish).

This particular fungus was first described in 1912 by American mycologist Howard James Banker (1866-1940), who gave this species its present name Hydnellum peckii.
