It’s possible to mount the switches in the same or in different electrical boxes, but the latter case involves the extra task of running a circuit cable between the boxes. Run 12-gauge electrical cable between each switch and the light it controls.

Three-way switches have three terminals (in addition to a ground terminal) and can control one fixture from two locations.

A multi-way circuit is where two or more light switches control the same light or set of lights. If there are two switches controlling the same light, they are both 3-way switches.

Series and parallel circuits

• There are two types of circuit we can make, called series and parallel.
• If there are no branches then it’s a series circuit.
• If there are branches it’s a parallel circuit.

The middle switch is an intermediate type. Both of the three way switching diagrams can be extended to four, five or even more switches. All of the additional switches are internediate types (4 terminals), and connect into the middle of the circuit in exactly the same way.
