A gerbil cage should be at least 20 gallons. The minimum cage size for a pair of gerbils should be 2,500 cm² (400 sq inches). The cage should have a height of at least 30 cm (12″). A gerbilarium (made of glass) is the recommended cage for keeping pet gerbils.

The point is this; plastic and wood simply won’t hold gerbils for long. The reality, therefore, is that the very safest cages for gerbils are made of metal or glass; neither of these can be destroyed over over-active gerbils.

Fill the cage with 4 inches of bedding. A large amount of bedding will also allow your gerbil to bury its food. Use absorbent bedding such as recycled paper bedding or dust-free Aspen shavings. Avoid pine and cedar shavings since the fumes are harmful to gerbils.

Gerbils are very territorial, and will be aggressive towards other unfamiliar gerbils. Ideally, you should pick out two gerbils that are already living together, or that are between six and eight weeks old. This will result in a much smoother transition for them to live together in the new cage you will provide.
Q. Will my gerbil be OK alone?
To live with other gerbils, they should never be kept alone. They are happiest in same-sex pairs or small groups. Gerbils are sociable animals and, in the wild, group sizes range from two to 15 animals of all ages and sexes.
