For better or worse, the developers managed to capture the spirit of anarchy

The Hacker – Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 3 Live Event

Chapter 5 Season 3 of Fortnite is absolutely overwhelming. The first time I dropped out of the Battle Bus and onto the wastelands of Brawler's Battleground, I couldn't see up and down. The stadium – which is designed to look like a monster truck rally ground – is equipped with flamethrowers, live rock music and piles of spinning rip blades. After winning a desperate scramble with other players and scattered AI bots, I didn't stop to protect and heal. Instead, I went into my menu and turned the volume down.

As it turns out, that flurry of activity in those opening moments came to characterize the general atmosphere of Fortnite's latest major update. This season, called "Wrecked," pushes Fortnite away from its fine European premises and instead creates an anarchic wasteland inspired by the Fallout games and, apparently, Mad Max. Take those two franchises as points of inspiration, then throw a heavy dose of Metallica on top, and the result is a gaming experience that's caked in chaotic sludge – so much so that it can weigh down the fun at times.

The update is absolutely full of new items. There are Nitro Fists, which can take on even the toughest opponents with a burst of power. There's a new set of medallions, which you pick up after boss fights and use to give yourself powerful buffs. There are the Lockjaw battle trucks, which can plow through anything and contain mounted turrets.
