While much of the PC industry is still eager to inflate the AI PC hype bubble, the reaction from some analysts and biz consumers is milder as they sit on the sidelines to see how the first-generation technology takes shape.

Why CIOs need to be chief learning officers in the AI era

Gartner recently told us that it expects AI this year to drive revenue for makers of infrastructure kits—think servers, storage, and so on—as they prepare for broader adoption of model training or generative AI applications.

As for on-device AI breathing new life into PC sales, a segment of the market only recently emerging from a two-year slump, this won't be a big driver. In fact, spending on devices is expected to grow just 3.6 percent year-over-year in 2024.

Ranjit Atwal, Gartner's research director focused on the impact of Gen on AI computing, told The Register today: "If PC vendors insist on charging a premium for AI computing without demonstrable benefits, companies will buy PCs without AI or those with lower specifications.
