Imagine having a sword or item that you got from DLC. The stats were pretty okay a while back but when you gained a few levels and acquired a stronger weapon, you have to trade it for the new one.
Your new sword has great stats, but it doesn't look as good as your older gear. So you get to use the new one even if it doesn't look as good as your old one.
