Spanish-American War

This put Mexico and Germany against each other, ultimately placing a largely negative interaction between the two. On 22 May 1942, Mexico declared war on Germany during World War II.

Mexican forces, led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna, invaded the disputed region and crushed the defenders at the Battle of the Alamo in March of 1836. Santa Anna was soundly defeated by General Sam Houston at the Battle of San Jacinto in April of 1836, however, and Texas won its independence.

In December 1861, Emperor Napoleon III invaded Mexico on a pretext that Mexico had refused to pay its foreign debt, though in retrospect, Emperor Napoleon III wanted to expand his empire in Latin-America and this became known as the Second French intervention in Mexico.

On this day in 1862, a Mexican force triumphed over a much better equipped French army in a battle that took place in Puebla.

Being an independent nation was not easy. Over the years, Mexico received economic support from several nations, France and England among them. Later on, even Spain supported the new country. Thus, Mexico became indebted.

Mexicans have divergent ancestry, including Spanish, African, indigenous and German. And while skin color in Mexico ranges from white to black, most people – 53 percent – identify as mestizo, or mixed race.

It seems ironic to celebrate this Mexican holiday in France since it commemorates the little known victory of the Mexican army over the French on the 5th of May in 1862.

The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a multi-day festival held at the end of October and the first few days of November. So no, Cinco de Mayo is not the same as Day of the Dead.
