All snowflakes contain six sides or points owing to the way in which they form. The molecules in ice crystals join to one another in a hexagonal structure, an arrangement which allows water molecules – each with one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms – to form together in the most efficient way.

In Missouri in the early 1860s, a “Snowflake” was a person who was opposed to the abolition of slavery—the implication of the name being that such people valued white people over black people. The Snowflakes hoped slavery would survive the country’s civil war, and were contrasted with two other groups.

Water molecules in the solid state, such as in ice and snow, form weak bonds (called hydrogen bonds) to one another. These ordered arrangements result in the basic symmetrical, hexagonal shape of the snowflake.

Xennials live in the cusp between Gen X and millennial. Gen X is officially defined as those born between 1965 and 1980; millennials were born between 1981 and 1996. But what about those born between, say, 1978 and 1983? It was a strange time to be alive.

Which Generation are You?

Xennials are a “micro-generation” born between 1977 and 1985. This group has also been called the “Oregon Trail Generation.” Xennials may have been hit hardest by the recession because of a combination of student-loan debt, job loss, and other factors.

Xennial may very well be such a word. It’s a word that refers to people who were born on the cusp between Generation X and the millennials. Some consider ‘xennials’ to be those born between 1977 and 1983. The term Xennial doesn’t exist for the sole purpose of making old millennials feel better about themselves.

The “Xennials” are those born on the cusp of when Gen X-ers and Millennials meet, and therefore experienced world events, and especially technology, in unique ways particular to their age. According to Pew Research, members of Generation X were born between 1965 and 1980 and Millennials were born between 1981 and 1996.

In 2018, Business Insider described Xennials as people who don’t feel like a Generation Xer or a Millennial, using birth dates between 1977 and 1985. “In internet folklore, xennials are those born between 1977 and 1983”, according to The Guardian.

Defined as the generation born between 1982 and 2004, millennials are aged between 13 and 35. The generation before, Gen X, spanned another 20 years, beginning in 1961 and ending in 1981.

Generation Z (or Gen Z for short), colloquially also known as zoomers, is the demographic cohort succeeding Millennials and preceding Generation Alpha. Researchers and media use the mid-to-late 1990s as starting birth years and the early 2010s as ending birth years.

Zennials, nestled between Millennials and Gen Z and born between 1992 and 1998, represent the next iteration of a cusp cohort under spotlight.

Forbes attempts to explain the phenomenon of Gen Z by claiming the “Z” stands for “Zombie,” though that’s not completely accurate. Gen Z, then, follows suit in alphabetical order (and the subsequent generation, starting around 2013, has been tentatively named “Generation Alpha”).

Lower Wages Compared to earlier generations, the millennial generation makes less when adjusting for inflation, and they face other financial problems like massive student loans. Those who work minimum wage jobs see the biggest disparity.
