Molecules in air are constantly moving and hitting the dust particles. Because the molecules are moving in many directions, they collide with the dust particles from different directions. This action causes the darting motion of the dust that you observe. Atoms and molecules are always in motion.

Is it normal to see dust particles in the air? It depends on how much dust you see floatingin the air, but seeing them can mean that your indoor air quality needs to be checked. If you see dust particles, this means that the circulation in your indoor space isn’t that effective.

Dust particles floating in the air are called aerosols. All air contains these aerosols in large numbers. Normal outdoor air contains usually over 40 million particles per cubic meter air measuring over 0.3 µm. Causes for the formation of aerosols.

How do you remove dust from the air?

1. Dust properly. Clean surfaces with a damp cloth or sponge.
2. Clean bed linens more often. Clean your sheets, pillows and pillow cases at least once every week in hot water.
3. Vacuum regularly.
4. Mop the floors.
5. Keep dirt out.
6. Maintain your home.
7. Use HEPA air filters.
8. Skip the clutter.

When doing your thorough cleaning, dust the room before vacuuming so you can vacuum up the particles that float into the air as you work and settle on the floor.

Use a Vacuum If your vacuum has a filter, you can try simply vacuuming the air. It sounds silly, but if you can see the dust in the air (pointing a desk lamp at an angle into the air can better allow you to see it), then you will clearly see the dust getting sucked up by the vacuum hose as you slowly move it around.

If your HEPA filter is not specifically labelled as washable or “permanent,” then the answer is no. You can rinse the filter in water, tap excess dust off of it or remove some dust with a vacuum, but this can definitely damage the mesh of fibers that allows the filter to remove particles from the air.

HEPA filters can be reused if they are properly washed or cleaned. Fortunately for you, this can be done with non-washable filters too! However, it is important to clean the filter properly with a vacuum cleaner.

There’s More Dust Near the Air Vents One clever way to determine if the air filter is dirty is to do the “white sheet test.” This involves hanging a clean white sheet approximately 5 inches away from one of the vents for at least one hour. If the sheet turns gray, you’ve got a filthy air filter.

Air filters cannot work better when dirty, once it’s clogged with dirt; it blocks the free flow of air into the cooling system and out of the air conditioner. The air filter must be cleaned of dirt and dust. For this reason, to get the best performance, internal combustion engines need clean intake air.

Without a filter there to trap air pollutants, your home’s air quality will deteriorate. That’s because the same air contaminants will just circulate through your home. But what’s worse is that you’re likely bringing even more pollutants into your home on a daily basis.

When a furnace filter is placed backwards, the fibers can’t do their job properly. This means your furnace has to work harder to generate the same air flow, resulting in increased energy costs. Particles are also allowed to build up irregularly, making the furnace working even harder to draw air.

Typically, a new engine air filter is white or off white in color. If the engine air filter is white or just slightly dirty, it’s good to stay in. A thin layer of dirt can be cleaned off by tapping it to release the loose debris. If the filter is caked with dirt and other contaminants, it needs to be changed.

When the thermostat’s fan setting is set to “ON” the indoor blower will run 24/7, constantly circulating air over the air filter. So now the filter is constantly catching airborne contaminants, causing it to quickly get dirty.

The black dust coming out of your vents could be soot, which is the byproduct of burning a candle or using the fireplace. Because your AC is constantly sucking in air from your home to be cooled, it can pull in soot and blow it back into your home. One way to check if soot is the culprit is to check your air filter.

Dust comes from many sources, including pet dander, dust mites, tracked-in dirt, and blown-in pollen. While it’s true that the ductwork in your home may contain dust, the particulates often adhere to the inside of the ducts and are not dislodged when the furnace or air conditioner is running.

Many other molds are green or grey, but black mold tends to be a dark greenish black or gray color. It will appear around the home as a slimy, dark greenish-black or gray substance. Black mold grows off of moisture, releasing spores as it consumes organic substances.
