If you are stuck and cannot decide whether a rock is sedimentary, igneous or metamorphic here are some clues. Sedimentary rocks are made up of grains of sediment that have been weathered from a pre-existing rock or mineral. They are made up of interlocking crystals that form when molten rock cools.

Granite is a rock with interlocking grains. Other types of rock have rounded grains. Sandstone is a rock with rounded grains.

Igneous rocks form by cooling and crystallization from a molten state. Therefore, they consist of interlocking crystals. Intrusive igneous rocks cool and crystallize slowly within the earth and so have coarse grains. Note that both rock types consist of interlocking crystals.

It has medium-grained Interlocking crystals with no alignment. Metamorphic rocks were once igneous or sedimentary rocks, but have been changed (metamorphosed) as a result of intense heat and/or pressure within the Earth’s crust. They are crystalline and often have a “squashed” (foliated or banded) texture.

Igneous rocks do not contain any fossils. This is because any fossils in the original rock will have melted when the rock melted to form magma.

Pick up the rock and assess its weight. If the rock feels lighter than that surrounding rocks, it may be a geode. Geodes have a hollow space inside, which is what allows the crystals to form. You may hear small pieces of rock or crystal rattling around inside if it is hollow.

Large amethyst geodes can go for thousands. Baseball sized geodes with non-spectacular quartz or calcite crystals can be purchased for $4-$12. Geodes with uncommon minerals that are sold on mineral auction sites range in price from $30-$500.

There are many easily accessible geode collecting sites in the western United States, including in California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada. The state of Iowa also has geodes, in fact, the geode is their state rock. The finest concentration of geode sites in Southern California is in Riverside and Imperial counties.

Most geodes contain clear quartz crystals, while others have purple amethyst crystals. Still others can have agate, chalcedony, or jasper banding or crystals such as calcite, dolomite, celestite, etc.

Geodes are the minerals that have other minerals inside of their cavity. The geode structure is one of the most striking crystalline structures you can find in the gemstone world. These are often created with Chalcedony Quartz found internally within a rock. That is what makes this such a stunning stone.

As with most popular or valuable objects, fake “geodes” have been manufactured by people and offered for sale as naturally-formed objects.

Fake geodes can be identified based on how they were manufactured. Synthetic versions lack flaws that are found in natural geodes, while composites and imitations often have evidence of bubbling, cracking, splotchy paint, artificial color, and leftover glue.

They are naturally formed quartz geodes bonded with metal vapours to make their beauty POP! It’s hard to resist the allure of a rock that is rugged and weathered on the outside, yet so sparkly and colourful on the inside.

Add baking soda until the water can’t dissolve it anymore, the mixture is saturated. That means the water is holding as much of the baking soda as it can. You can add a few drops of food coloring to each glass to make the crystals colorful. baking soda crystals will look like after a few days.

Over thousands of years, these layers of minerals build crystals that eventually fill the cavity. How long this takes depends on the size of the geode — the largest crystals can take a million years to grow.

What You Do:

1. Crack the eggs close to the top of the narrow end.
2. Carefully place eggshell under warm running water and peel the membrane from the shell.
3. Once the membrane is removed and the eggshells are rinsed, invert them on a paper towel to dry.
4. For alum crystal geodes, paint the inside of the shell with white glue.

This simply means that there are suspended particles of alum powder in it, and as the solution cools, these particles of alum begin falling to the bottom. As the alum particles settle on the bottom, they begin crystallizing.

Twelve to 15 hours

Start by preparing your borax solution. Add 4 tablespoons of borax and 1 cup of water to a jar. Microwave the solution in 30-second intervals, stirring after each internal. After about 2 1/2 minutes (or 5 intervals) the borax should be completely dissolved.

How to Make Crystal Eggshell Geodes in 5 Easy Steps

1. Ingredients. 1/2 cup Water.
2. Heat up the water. Bring your water to a boil.
3. Add the epsom salt. Add the epsom salt a little bit at a time.
4. Pour the solution into the empty eggs.
5. Let the crystals grow.

Boil 1 cup water and remove from heat (an adult’s job). Slowly add ½ cup Epsom salt and stir until it’s dissolved. Continue stirring in small amounts of salt (a tablespoon or two at a time but no more than ½ cup) until it no longer dissolves, then STOP. You’ve made a super-saturated solution!

What You Do:

1. In the beaker, stir 1/2 cup of magnesium sulfate with 1/2 cup of very hot tap water for at least one minute.
2. Add a couple drops of food coloring if you want your crystals to be colored.
3. Put the beaker in the refrigerator.
4. Check on it in a few hours to see a beaker full of crystals!
