Interview As the IT industry faces a tipping point thanks to AI, lessons can be learned from Docker about how a company can – or must – adapt to a changing reality.

Docker Extension for Red Hat OpenShift

Scott Johnston, longtime CEO of Docker, was at last week's Kubecon event to talk about the arrival of Testcontainers on Red Hat's OpenShift—a convenient development tool for using cloud-based resources. But Johnston also spoke to The Register about the challenges of changing strategy and offered advice to those considering a license change.

Johnston is a Docker stalwart, having joined the company in 2014. He became CEO in 2019 at a time when Docker was facing an existential crisis. It may have been the container king, but it was losing the container runtime war.

In a 2019 blog, then-CEO Rob Bearden announced Johnston's appointment, admitting that the developer and enterprise operations were "very different". Mirantis took up Docker's enterprise business while Johnston moved on to the developer front.
