Dry ice is safe to use in cocktails, it will not alter the flavor in any way. The ice will sink to the bottom of your glass, but take extra precaution not to ingest it or touch it in any way.

Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide. It is used primarily as a cooling agent, but is also used in fog machines at theatres for dramatic effects. Its advantages include lower temperature than that of water ice and not leaving any residue (other than incidental frost from moisture in the atmosphere).

It is recommended to keep the dry ice at the bottom of your cooler. Â If your cooler is big enough, a solid block of dry ice is recommended, but cylindrical pellets are a good substitute. By keeping the dry ice at the bottom, you are allowing the food at the top to stay cool, without freezing.

Use the Right Cooler—We don’t recommend using dry ice in your soft cooler, simply because the stuff is so intense that it could damage the material. Hard coolers are your best bet.

What Is Dry Ice Fog? When dry ice is added to warm water a dense white fog is immediately generated. The white fog is an aerosol of tiny water droplets just like fog created naturally. What’s happening is that the very cold dry ice is subliming from solid to the gaseous phase and bubbling through the water.

Because it is colder to begin with, it should be more effective at keeping your ice chest cold. Dry ice also doesn’t melt and leave a puddle of water. As it warms up, it turns into a gas rather than liquid. That means that the items in your ice chest won’t end up in a puddle of water.

When shipping frozen food, it’s best to use the following packaging to keep foods frozen during transit:

1. Foam insulating food shipping containers such as styrofoam.
2. Dry ice boxes.
3. Cardboard boxes with insulated box liners to keep temperatures cold.
