Frogs absorb practically everything through their skin. Salts, oils, soil and lotions from our hands can irritate the frog’s skin badly. Don’t use soap before handling a frog. Just rinse your hands and leave them slightly moist.

When the frog is out of the water, mucus glands in the skin keep the frog moist, which helps absorb dissolved oxygen from the air. Frogs do not have ribs nor a diaphragm, which in humans helps serve in expand the chest and thereby decreasing the pressure in the lungs allowing outside air to flow in.

A healthy, living tadpole should swim around in the water. Its tail should always move. If the tadpole doesn’t move its tail for 15 to 20 minutes and it is floating somewhat lopsidedly in the water, it’s dead. Avoid moving frogspawn as it can have adverse effects. You may inadvertently be transporting amphibian diseases to a new pond or be moving invasive, non-native plants that could take over (see our Just Add Water booklet for more info).

Movement of spawn/tadpoles between ponds is potentially risky and should be avoided; ponds should colonise naturally. We do not recommend moving animals or their spawn around because of the threat of unwittingly transferring various diseases and invasive plants.

Moving frog or toad spawn or tadpoles to other ponds increases the risk that any non-native invasive plant or animal species will also travel to the new pond and could do real harm to frogs, toads and other pond-inhabitants.

If you’re seeing frogs but no spawn, there might be too few females; it might have been predated (especially if there are fish in the pond) or it might have sunk if there is no vegetation to support it. Frogspawn develops best in warm, shallow water with plenty of direct sunlight.

They are attracted by the humid, moist conditions which also attracts other insects and small creatures on a frog’s menu. Garden ponds that are shaded and filled with appropriate pond plants create the perfect breeding ground for frogs.

What Eats Tadpoles?
