Drain, waste and vent fittings (DWV) made from acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) are used for residential and commercial sanitary systems. These fittings are joined by threading or solvent cementing and can easily be connected to steel, copper or cast iron through the use of transition fittings.

PVC pipe is more flexible than ABS, while ABS is a bit stronger and can resist a higher shock or impact. Additionally, PVC has an advantage in that it’s better at muffling the sound of water as it flows through the pipework.

Per pound, ABS is slightly more expensive than PVC. However, the extra step of applying PVC’s infamous purple primer will only compound labour costs. Additionally, PVC is considerably tougher on tools, and cutting it creates more burrs that need to smoothed out before priming, adding even more time to the process.

When it comes to longevity, there isn’t any reason to choose one over the other. If you install them right, either black or white plastic pipe will remain in service a lot longer than you will. Unlike PVC drain pipe, which requires purple primer and cement, ABS black plumbing pipe is joined with cement only.

Primer: Primer is used to clean and soften the surface of the plastic to ensure a good solvent weld. It’s used with both PVC and CPVC, but is not required with ABS. The primer is a readily identified purple color. For that, you can use an ABS to PVC cement, which is green.

PVC pipe is a popular construction material for its low cost and durability. PVC pipe can be used for most any drain, water, or ventilation application. PVC can become brittle and crack when placed in a few scenarios for prolonged periods of time.

Schedule 40 is the most common PVC type. Schedule 80 PVC is thicker and stronger, which enables it to handle higher pressures. Usually, PVC is only used for cold water pipes since hot water can eventually break down the plastic material. It can also degrade when exposed to the heat and UV rays of the sun.

PVC and CPVC pipe filled with water, sealed and placed in a freezing environment typically will not crack. The pipes will expand to absorb the net volumetric expansion of ice. However, if localized freezing in a water piping system occurs and results in the formation of an ice plug the system will become closed.

One common problem is the use of too much cement to bond a pipe to a fitting. The porous PVC will absorb the cement, and an excessive amount breaks down the integrity of the pipe. These faults can make it difficult for the cement to bond with the pipe, leading to pipe failure.

Making sure the parts of your plumbing are fully connected is essential. PVC pipe is designed to seat neatly into fittings and other pipes to create a tight seal. Water and gas are commonly pumped through PVC pipe, so a properly seated joint is essential.

2 Answers. If the pipe is totally encased in concrete small surface cracks would not affect. If the cracks go all the way through, like a total crack in a foundation, it could also damage the pipe. If the concrete has shifted along the crack line then the pipe is going to be damaged.
