Mitzvot is the plural form of mitzvah, a Hebrew word that roughly translates to “commandment.” Still, folks commonly interpret it as “a good deed.” The term mitzvah comes from the root word tzavta, which means “connection.” What makes a mitzvah a mitzvah is its emphasis on action.

The Ten Commandments are important mitzvot as they are the basis for moral behaviour. Some laws are judgements from God, for example “you shall not steal”. These are known as mishpatim.

God has purposed to receive glory by means of man. This principle is found in the first item of the Westminster Shorter Catechism (WSC), which states that “the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.” The purpose is His glory and the means is mankind: mankind glorifying Him and enjoying Him forever.

To truly put God first you have to let go of what others think and follow your heart. This means letting go of what your parents, spouse, kids, boss, and friends think. When you put God first, you give yourself a voice. You express yourself in a way that is true to you.

The Hebrew word kavod (Hebrew: ??????? ‎) (K-V-D) has meant “importance”, “weight”, “deference”, or “heaviness”, but primarily kavod means “glory”, “respect”, “honor”, and “majesty”. To glorify is to praise or honor something or someone to an extreme degree.

To honor or glorify God in everything includes having a strong work ethic, even when we work for those we do not like or labor in difficult situations. Glorifying God in everything means we honor Him in our thoughts and actions. Our Lord’s every thought, word, and action was totally devoted to the glory of God.

To glorify God is simply to make God’s glory seen and known; or to display God’s glory; or to draw attention to God’s glory. When God is made known to others in a way that accurately portrays Him we glorify Him.

I’ll leave you with Paul’s words from his first letter to the Corinthians (10:31): “ So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” Whatever you do, friends. In all things, do it for the glory of God.
