The rubber band actually expands when it gets colder! This occurs because of the unusual polymer structure of rubber. When the long chains get hotter and vibrate, they actually shorten, causing the material to contract. When the chains cool down, they relax and stretch out, causing the material to expand.

In normal materials, this vibration causes atoms to move apart and the material to expand. A few of the known shrinking materials, however, have unique crystal structures that cause them to contract when heated, a property called negative thermal expansion.

Heat will make wood expand and cold will make it shrink, potentially causing cracks or loose joints. Then there is humidity – wood also expands and contracts as it takes on or loses moisture. Many beautiful wood projects have been ruined because high humidity caused the wood in the finished piece to soak up moisture.

When we heat up glass that has a high coefficient of thermal expansion, the glass expands. The cool part of the glass contracts while the hot part does not so stress develops in the glass. Since glass is brittle, the stress can cause it to crack (or shatter in the worst case).

When glass is heated to a high temperature it becomes molten and molecules expand. If it is cooled very slowly (annealed) it has a chance to shrink but if cooled quickly there is too much stress and it will break. Glass has a co-efficient of expansion and contraction.

Occasionally, when picking up a glass from a shelf, the glass shatters in my hand for seemingly no reason. Why does this happen? This has to do with material properties, the way the glass is made and wear. When glass products are cooled and become hard, stresses often remain as a result of uneven cooling.

It is not as easy as it looks. Glass can break and shatter if hit wrong of getting mad and throwing it cutting your hands or wrists. The force you hit the glass with, applied to the wrong part of your hand, can break it. Make sure you have band aids nearby and gauze.

Depends on the glass of course. Just guessing but since glass typically breaks if you drop it, most people could break things like a wine glass pretty easy. The shards would also probably stick in your hand preventing you from fully breaking it without excruciating pain.

Typical glass, in general, is not able to handle such heat very well. Glass is less likely to break or shatter if we warm it up gradually. Pouring boiling water into an ice-cold glass is much more likely to shatter it, as is putting a hot piece of glass into a cold bath of water.

Examples include glass and most other ceramic materials. Many materials which are ductile at high temperatures become brittle when cooled below a critical temperature. This temperature is called the ductile to brittle transition temperature (DBTT) for metals and the glass transition temperature (Tg) for polymers.

It’s thermal differences and changes that break glass, not temperatures themselves. Yes, if you brought your mirror indoors after observing in sub-zero temperatures and dropped it into boiling water, it might break. So don’t do that! In normal use, there’s no chance whatsoever of damaging the mirror.
