As of version 2.0, VirtualBox supports 64-bit guest systems. You need a 64-bit CPU with hardware virtualization support (Intel-VT or AMD-V). Support must also be enabled in the BIOS – see Activating the Intel VT Virtualization Feature.

First, open VirtualBox, then click “New” to create a virtual machine. Enter “Ubuntu” as the name, select “Linux” as the type, and select Ubuntu (64-bit) as the version. NOTE: Select any amount of memory you wish, but don’t add more than 50 percent of your total RAM.

Mixed installations (e.g. Debian/Lenny ships an AMD64 kernel with 32-bit packages) are not supported. To install VirtualBox anyway you need to setup a 64-bit chroot environment. The VirtualBox base package binaries are released under the terms of the GPL version 2 .
