Dwarf Fortress – Minecarts (Beginner's Guide/Tutorial)

Dwarf Fortress is a construction and survival simulation game developed by Bay 12 Games. The game allows players to live in a fantasy world to help dwarves build a fortress on a continent full of hydras, titans or dragons. One of the basic mechanics of the game is to transport materials in the game with little effort to save time and energy. In this article, I'll help you build a minecart route for your fortress.

Minecarts are a powerful tool that allows you to transport materials such as rock or magma from one location to another. Veteran players use this tool as a lethal weapon or to help store items in specific areas of the fortress. However, novice players need to know the basics of using mincarts in order to use them effectively beyond their intended use.

When using minecarts, the first thing you do is click the inventory button at the bottom of the screen. Then you can click and drag the cursor to the location you prefer to place your layer. Warehouses are where your dwarves store various items in certain areas of the map. So it is important to place your inventory carefully to minimize the time to carry that specific item. A good example is creating a Bars and Blocks warehouse near your Stoneworker's Workshop, as shown in the image above.
