The district court in Länsi-Nyland, Finland, on Tuesday convicted Aleksanteri Kivimäki, 26, of crimes against the Vastaamo center and those in its care, which included over 20,000 blackmail attempts.

Specifically, a judge last month found Kivimäki guilty of 9,231 counts of aggravated dissemination of information that violates the privacy of individuals, 20,745 counts of aggravated attempted extortion and 20 counts of aggravated extortion. The former CEO of Vastaamo has already received a three-month suspended sentence for failing to protect his clients' data.

Kivimäki's extortion campaign apparently sparked so many complaints to the police that it caused Finland's reported crime rates to soar in a week, exceeding more than twice the normal rate.
