A UK government-approved ID card scheme will appoint Fujitsu as a business outsourcing provider despite the Japanese company's previous pledge to refrain from participating in UK public procurement.
UK DIGITAL ID – FILL IN THE FORM EASY
Fujitsu is considered the preferred bidder for the Proof of Age Standards Scheme (PASS) which is run by a not-for-profit company approved by the Home Office.
The government is set to expand the PASS system to phone-based digital ID cards. While the physical cards, which use holograms, could come from a number of companies, a single company is expected to build the software to authenticate users through a smartphone app or barcode scanner.
The contract, which is expected to be worth around £1m, comes at a challenging time for the Japanese tech giant as it deals with the fallout from the Horizon Post Office scandal.
