Furiosa harkens back to the rage that made the first Mad Max great – and the connections are important to the story

The Complete Mad Max Saga & Timeline Explained (1979 – Furiosa)

The Mad Max franchise has always thrived on reinvention. No two consecutive films in the franchise have ever been the same, and most of them aren't even that much alike, except for themes like the Wasteland and the idea of a lone wanderer doing his best to survive. Furiosa, the newest film in the series, may be the biggest exception to that rule: While the film is expressly a prequel to Fury Road, it takes its biggest inspiration from the original 1979 Mad Max, giving Max and Furiosa similarly tragic origin stories.

Five films into the series, with each one bigger, stronger and more bombastic than the last, it's easy to forget that George Miller started Max Rockatansky's story with a simple film about roving gangs and a man facing a personal tragedy.
