AI-generated and assisted code contributions are no longer allowed in the Gentoo Linux distribution.
Gentoo bans AI-made code submissions
A ban on AI-generated code was originally proposed on February 27 by Michał Górny, a member of the Gentoo Council, an elected committee that governs Linux distros. Górny argued for an AI ban on three main grounds: potential copyright infringement, quality control issues, and ethical considerations surrounding AI's high power consumption and the role of big business in shaping the technology.
Indeed, copyright is becoming a chronic problem for AI models, which may or may not be trained on proprietary material, with Nvidia being one of the latest companies to be sued. AI is also known to produce nonsensical text and code, and has even been observed hallucinating entire software packages.
In addition to banning the submission of AI code, Górny said he also wanted Gentoo to offer something unique to the Linux community.
