The absence of Nettles is a wasted opportunity to challenge the Targaryens as George RR Martin expressed frustration with the show's changes.

George RR Martin's HOUSE OF THE DRAGON Drama Explained

Fans have heard George RR Martin's side of the many changes made to HBO's House of the Dragon after he published a now-deleted blog post criticizing the absence of a major character from the show. Before that, he also pointed out how another significant figure seems to be missing during the sowing of dragon seeds, or the gathering of the Targaryen bastards.

While the changes made in season 1 seemed reasonable at some point, the continuation of the changes, not only to the story but also the characters, could have a massive impact in the subsequent seasons. Martin believed that the show should have established in Season 2 the basic cast that will take place in Season 3.

George RR Martin already warned in his Beware the Butterflies post that more toxic changes are coming if House of the Dragon goes ahead with the changes the writers plan to make for seasons 3 and 4.
