Ridley Scott is a brilliant director, and this is just another example of that.

How Ridley Scott Made Matt Damon CRY in The Martian

Matt Damon has a very varied filmography in his career so far. From Good Will Hunting to Oppenheimer and everything in between, he has given one spectacular performance after another. But it was Ridley Scott who directed The Martian, which became a turning point in the latter half of his ongoing career trajectory.

The Martian is an Oscar-nominated film released in 2015. Adapted by Drew Goddard from Andy Weir's book of the same name, this fictional story depicted the life of an astronaut stranded on Mars. The film, as well as the performance of the ensemble, was praised by both critics and audiences, especially Damon, who showed the struggle to exist on an alien planet, all on his own.

Being a character stranded on an alien planet meant that the character Matt Damon was all alone. He had a handful of crew members, but other than that there was no other human he could bounce off of his performance. Damon was left alone and the filming time took a toll on him.
