While Fullmetal Alchemist has now become an international phenomenon and even used to be MyAnimeList's top-ranked title for over a decade, its success was anything but a fluke. However, Hiromu Arakawa, the creator behind this endlessly popular dark fantasy series, initially doubted how much success it would actually have.

Arakawa thought Fullmetal Alchemist would fade out in just two volumes! And this was truly the biggest misunderstanding of her life, as she saw that the manga couldn't even get a second colored volume.

In a rerun interview, Hiromu Arakawa said that she originally felt that Fullmetal Alchemist would never take off after the first few volumes. She indicates that after the first issue came out in color, she was surprised that subsequent chapters were not in color and therefore assumed that the series was not popular enough.
