D. Rip Van Winkle and Ichabod Crane are both anti-heroes who lack masculine virtues and heroic qualities. This connects Rip with Ichabod Crane, who is also described as a great favorite with the ladies of Sleepy Hollow.

The character of Rip Van Winkle was the main character of the story of the same name. He’s good-natured, loved by the children of the village, and helpful to his neighbors, but at home, he’s lazy and henpecked by his wife (with henpecked meaning that she complains constantly and nags him about being lazy and careless).

Washington Irving’s story ”Rip Van Winkle” has three major themes. One theme is freedom, or the ability to make your own decisions. Another theme is progress, or moving forward. The final theme is change, which happens when things become different.

Irving conveys the theme of freedom versus tyranny throughout the story. Rip Van Winkle seeks nothing more than the freedom to be his kind, simple self and to live the idle life he wants to live. His freedom and good nature endear him to his fellow villagers, whom he is happy to help and to pass the time with.

In Rip Van Winkle, one of the main conflicts is man-vs-man conflict between Rip and his wife, Dame Van Winkle. When Dame Van Winkle gets angry, Rip does his best to disappear by going fishing, hunting with his dog, or hanging out in the village telling stories and gossiping with his friends.

Rip Van Winkle is an amiable farmer who wanders into the Catskill Mountains, where he comes upon a group of dwarfs playing ninepins. Rip accepts their offer of a drink of liquor and promptly falls asleep. When he awakens, 20 years later, he is an old man with a long white beard; the dwarfs are nowhere in sight.

His tale goes something like this: Set in pre-Revolutionary New York, Rip Van Winkle lives a life of ease – much to the chagrin of his wife, Dame Van Winkle. One day, Rip wanders off into the woods to escape his nagging wife.
