Another one of the best ways of how to hang posters without frames is to use double-sided poster tape. You might not know there is a tape or two made precisely for hanging posters. This kind of tape has the right type of gentle adhesive that doesn’t hurt walls or posters if used correctly.

Unroll the rolled paper and place on top of the tissue paper. Carefully lay a heavy board or a thick, heavy book down on the unrolled paper. Let the paper sit under the weight for 24 hours. If the ends still start to curl after the weight is removed, let the paper sit under the weight for another day.

Here’s what we suggest.

1. Roll the poster out onto a flat surface, such as a table.
2. Place a bed sheet or towel over the poster.
3. Lightly spray the sheet or towel with water until it is slightly damp, not wet.
4. Using the lowest heat setting on your iron, iron the poster through the sheet*

It’ll take a day or two for the poster to dry, but it’s easier to control the water exposure than it is the heat from the iron.

The flattening method:

1. Simply put, you can gently de-curl the print by rolling it in the opposite direction to which it is curled.
2. You will need a heavy duty cardboard tube with an inside diameter of about 3 inches/7.5 centimeters.
3. Prepare a flat, smooth, hard surface for working.
4. Clean your hands.

If the poster doesn’t respond to the iron method, place a towel over the poster and use a steam setting, using very little water. The steam will relax the crease in the poster. Remove the poster from beneath the steamed towel and set it in a frame or atop a piece of flat cardboard.

Restoration can dramatically improve the appearance of a poster (see example below). Damage caused by clear adhesive tape, residual stains, water marks and dirt can be easily repaired; combining this with the replacement of lost paper can bring the poster back to virtually its original state.

Here are some ideas for giving your posters a second life.

1. Keep it above your desk (and out of the poster graveyard)
2. Hang it up on the walls outside your lab.
3. Use it as wrapping paper.
4. Make a useful papercraft.
5. Sew it into a bag.
6. Wear it as a scarf.
