Separating the solvent from a solution – simple distillation

1. Salt solution is heated.
2. Water evaporates and its vapours rise. The water vapour passes into the condenser, where it cools and condenses. Liquid water drips into a beaker.
3. All the water has evaporated from the salt solution, leaving the salt behind.

Salt can be recovered from its solution by evaporation.

Reverse osmosis is an effective means to desalinate saline water, but it is more expensive than other methods. As prices come down in the future the use of reverse osmosis plants to desalinate large amounts of saline water should become more common.

The most common and effective way to remove salt from water is through physical filtration. Specifically, reverse osmosis systems are capable of removing salt and a wide variety of other contaminants from softened water.
