The origin of the name, Cuckfield (earlier spelled Kukefeld, Cucufeld, and Cucufelda), is debated but it is generally associated with the cuckoo which is the village emblem. The village grew as a market town; and an important coaching stop between London and Brighton, since it lay on the turnpike.

Cuckfield is a pretty village dating to the Saxon period. It became a thriving staging post on the main London road to the south coast before the construction of a nearby toll road. Near the village is Borde Hill Garden, built around the collection of plants gathered from the Far East by Colonel Stephenson Clarke.

Etymology. The first element of the place-name Haywards Heath is derived from the Old English hege + worð, meaning hedge enclosure, with the later addition of hǣð.

It was founded in the 11th century and was in the possession of Lewes Priory by 1090.

Toponymy. The name “Sussex” is derived from the Middle English Suth-sæxe, which is in turn derived from the Old English Suth-Seaxe which means (land or people) of the South Saxons (cf. Essex, Middlesex and Wessex).

World’s End is a neighbourhood located in Burgess Hill, West Sussex. It is thought that the name arrived with the railway – it was here that the ‘up’ line met the ‘down’ line during construction of the Brighton main line in what is now the World’s End area.

Four Corners, USA is the only place in the United States where four states meet: Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado. There’s a monument there. And from the National Geodetic Survey comes word that it’s not in the right place.

The word used by corners in the original Hebrew is kanaph (כָּנָף). The word kanaph means wing of a being or animal and it also means extremity.
